Mrs. Gwendolyn Pierce Harris, affectionately known as “Sweet Polly” was born on July 12, 1948 to the late Larry James Pierce and Hazel Mitchell Pierce in Greenville, NC. Gwen attended Greenville City Schools, graduating from C. M. Eppes High School in 1966. She furthered her education at North Carolina Central University (NCCU); Pitt Community College (PCC) and East Carolina University (ECU). Gwendolyn retired from ECU where she was an administrative secretary. She became owner of Harris Beauty Salon and worked as a full-time licensed cosmetologist following her retirement. She was an active member of Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully as an usher, Sunday School attendee; member of the finance committee and count team. Gwen was also an enthusiastic, loyal member of the Southside Senior Club, Senior Bowling League and the Eppes Heritage Alumni Association. Gwen enjoyed socializing, traveling (especially cruising), baking, gardening, scoping out area yard sales, fishing and playing cards with her classmates. A ‘master craftsperson’, she loved exercising her creative capabilities through upholstering, refinishing furniture and sewing, to name a few. She was willing to help others in their time of crisis, responding without hesitation. Her love of family was tremendous and she relished time spent with her grandsons. Gwendolyn is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, Carl Edward Harris of the home; one son Rodney Brice Harris and daughter-in-law Kristina Snuggs Harris (Greenville, NC); grandsons Courtland Brice Harris (Greenville, NC) and Sgt. Cameron Brice Harris (Fort Cambell, Kentucky); sisters, Theresa Blount (Willie); Ernestine Morris, Sandra Pierce, Marian Langley, all of Greenville, NC and Rhonda Brown (Michael) Winterville, NC; brothers Larry James Pierce, Wake Forest, NC and William Pierce (Shirley), Raleigh, NC; sister-In-Law, Phyllis Hyman (James); cousins, Cynthia Williams, Greenville, NC and Alma Caine (Audley) Guilford, CT; godchildren, Grecia Edwards (Hyattsville, MD) and Brenton Edwards (Charlotte, NC); seven nieces, five nephews, other relatives and friends.
